The inaugural Year 9 Celebration Showcase took place on Monday 29th June with a series of entertaining and enlightening insights into life as a Year 9 student.

With dance, slam poetry and LAMDA performances and reports on the History pop up shop, individual sporting achievements plus team sports across the year there was plenty to engage our enthusiastic audience. Certificates were presented for the Year 9 Passport across Bronze, Silver and Gold awards in recognition of students’ commitment and achievements, making the most of the opportunities available to them.

Head of Year 9, Sally Saunders, commented: “Year 9 can often be seen as a year where not much happens as there are not formal exams. However, this is such a vibrant and important year at Leighton Park. We have prioritised a broad curriculum so that students can experience as many different subject areas as possible across the year. But we also wanted to capture what else was going on and what are young people are getting involved with and contributing to.

They have enjoyed leading and organising the showcase. Sophie Rowse (Head of Netball and Year 9 Tutor) and Stacey McFadyen (Pastoral Co-Ordinator) have been incredible at supporting them and making sure they had everything printed and parents knew about the event. But the actual running of the event and performances was all down to the students. The opportunity for student leadership was all part of it and seeing them manage when things didn't quite go to plan is so important for building resilience and a 'can do' culture.

Our outgoing Year 9s are wonderful set of students who we know will go on to make a success of their GCSEs and beyond. They have been open to challenges and have been involved in so many things. We will miss spending so much time with them but will continue to support and cheer them on from the sidelines.”
