Leighton Park offers the course at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL), allowing students to choose the pathway that best matches their interests, strengths and future aspirations.
Students study:
- Number and Algebra
- Functions
- Geometry and Trigonometry
- Statistics and Probability
- Calculus
Students also complete an Internal Assessment (Mathematical Exploration), an individual investigation worth 20% of the final grade.
The use of a Graphical Display Calculator (GDC) is expected throughout the course.
Mathematics Standard Level (SL)
Suitable for students who enjoy mathematics in practical contexts and wish to develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills. SL provides excellent preparation for a wide range of university courses.
Mathematics Higher Level (HL)
Designed for students with exceptional mathematical ability who enjoy challenging problems and wish to study mathematics in greater depth. HL is particularly suited to students considering Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics or other mathematically demanding degrees.
Assessment
Standard Level (SL): Two written examinations (80%) and one Internal Assessment (20%).
Higher Level (HL): Three written examinations (80%) and one Internal Assessment (20%).
Skills Gained on this Course
- Logical and analytical thinking
- Mathematical modelling
- Data interpretation
- Problem-solving
- Communication of mathematical ideas
- Effective use of technology
