Curiosity, Creativity and Critical thinking on display at the FPQ Expo

On Wednesday 17 June, Year 8 students proudly showcased the results of their independent projects, demonstrating the curiosity, creativity and critical thinking that underpin the FPQ. 

Over the course of the last four months, students have pursued self-directed lines of enquiry, culminating in either a fully referenced 1,000-word dissertation or the creation of a unique artefact.

Head of Teaching and Learning, Jenny Powlesland, remarked: “We continue to be impressed by the curiosity and originality shown by our students as they select topics that genuinely matter to them, and by the maturity and perseverance they demonstrate throughout the research process. For every student in Year 8 to undertake an original project and present the outcomes of their learning is a significant achievement. We congratulate this year’s FPQ cohort on the success of their endeavours and the enthusiasm with which they embraced independent learning.”

The questions explored by this year’s students reflected a remarkable breadth of interests and a willingness to engage with contemporary issues, emerging technologies and philosophical debates. Many projects considered the impact of artificial intelligence and the changing world around us, while others challenged accepted assumptions or examined questions relating to fairness, society and the future.

Project titles included: How should education systems evolve to prepare students for jobs that don't yet exist? by Ayesha; Can I make a model of Fryer House in Blender that looks like a real photograph of Fryer? by Cameron; and Is age the best way to determine when you can do things? by Isla.

The diversity of topics chosen highlights the individuality of each student and embodies the values that sit at the heart of a Leighton Park education. Whether exploring the opportunities presented by AI, considering how education might adapt to an uncertain future, or questioning how society defines maturity and responsibility, this year’s FPQ projects are a testament to the inquisitive minds, personal passions and thoughtful perspectives of the Year 8 cohort.
