Two teams of Lower Sixth students took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Schools’ Analyst Competition, an annual hands-on laboratory challenge for 16–17-year-olds.
This year’s forensic-themed competition saw students step into the role of analytical chemists to investigate the suspicious illness and death of a pharmacy worker. Their first task was to analyse coffee samples to determine whether unusually high levels of caffeine had contributed to the victim’s condition. They then used thin-layer chromatography to examine lipstick traces found on the victim’s collar and compare them with known samples. Finally, students investigated an unlabelled hand cream, analysing its composition to establish its likely source.
Working in teams, students applied a range of practical laboratory techniques and problem-solving skills to piece together the evidence and solve the mystery. It was an excellent opportunity to experience how chemistry can be used in real-world forensic investigations.
